In Praise of Nepotism: A History of Family Enterprise from King David to George W. Bush

In Praise of Nepotism: A History of Family Enterprise from King David to George W. Bush
Certain to be one of the most controversial books of the year, "In Praise of Nepotism is a learned, lively, and provocative look at a practice we all deplore -- except when we're involved in it ourselves. Nepotism, the favored treatment of one's relatives, is a custom with infinitely more practitioners than defenders -- especially in this country, where it is considered antidemocratic and almost un-American. Nepotism offends our sense of fair play and our meritocratic creed that we are supposed to earn what we get -- not have it handed to us on a proverbial silver platter. For more than two centuries, a campaign has been waged against it in the name of fairness and equality in the courts, the legislatures, and in the public and private arenas -- a campaign that has been only partly successful. For, far from disappearing, the practice has become so resurgent in recent years that we can now speak of a "new nepotism." In settings ranging from politics, business, and professional life to sports, the arts, and Hollywood, the children of famous and highly successful people have chosen to follow in their parents' career footsteps in a fashion and in numbers impossible to ignore. George W. Bush, Al Gore, Jr., and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton are only the tip of the iceberg that is an accelerating trend toward dynasticism and family "branding" in the heart of the American elite. Many see this as a deplorable development, to which Adam Bellow replies, "Not so fast. In this timely work (surprisingly, the first book ever devoted to nepotism), Adam Bellow brings fresh perspectives and vast learning and research to bear on this misunderstood and stigmatized practice. Drawing on the insights ofmodern evolutionary theory, he shows how nepotism is rooted in our very biological nature, as the glue that binds together not only insect and animal societies but, for most of the world and for most of history, human societies as well.

Going Out: The Rise and Fall of Public Amusements by David Nasaw,
David Nasaw has written a sparkling social history of twentieth-century show business and of the new American public that assembled in the city's pleasure palaces, parks, theaters, nickelodeons, world's fair midways, and dance halls. The new amusement centers welcomed women, men, and children, native-born and immigrant, rich, poor and middling. Only African Americans were excluded or segregated in the audience, though they were overrepresented in parodic form on stage. This stigmatization of the African American, Nasaw argues, was the glue that cemented an otherwise disparate audience, muting social distinctions among "whites," and creating a common national culture.

A argument involving Commodore's chairman Irving Gould, and Jack Tramiel ensued, resulting in Tramiel's immediate departure from Commodore in January of 1984. Both of these lines were created around the 6502 CPU and included a number of additional chips assisting this rather basic, but cost-effective CPU in providing graphics and sound support. This is a plausible explanation, since the Atari ST was primarily a competitor to the Commodore Amiga systems. Like most "retro" computers the Atari 2600 console (also known as VCS) and the various Atari 8-bit based home computers. Overview The Atari ST was generally less expensive and somewhat faster than the competition, but had lower quality graphics and sound. In fact the 8-bit machines had originally intended to be the replacement for the 2600, but they were later "re-purposed" as home computers to cash in on that market segment's much higher selling prices. Thanks to its built-in MIDI ports enjoyed success as a small think tank called Amiga in 1982 and set about creating the third generation machine, this time based on the much more powerful 68000 CPU. A argument involving Commodore's chairman Irving Gould, and Jack Tramiel ensued, resulting in Tramiel's immediate departure from Commodore in January of 1984.
